That was him processing everything in that moment. At the time, he dismissed their friendship as meaningless. And he just recently seemed to have that lightbulb moment that it wasn't going to happen. It's very easy to snap into how he talks to people.Įugene is obviously one of the smartest characters on the show, but he also spent years hoping Rosita would see him as more than a friend. So his manner of speaking and all that has become second nature in a way. And then there's been other writers that maybe it took them a rewrite because I’m like ‘This is such a tongue-twister, I can’t say it.” And they’re like “Oh sorry about that.” And then they fix it and it’s even better than it was before. they were writing a lot of Eugene’s dialogue at first and it just became second nature to them, and… the stuff would just flow and was very easy to memorize. But it is interesting to see, it's to the point where I can almost tell which writer wrote Eugene’s dialogue based on how easy… it flows. ![]() There's always little tidbits and lines and things I have to figure out what he's actually trying to say there. I still have to look up a lot of what he says because I don't necessarily always understand it. Has Eugene’s way of speaking become second nature to you now?Ī little bit. I've been on the show forever and I'm doing things for the first time now. It's been fun to just go on this journey with this guy and to be able to do all these things that I haven't been able to do before that, going back to your initial question, that's also another way we've kept it fresh…. So that's been fun to be able to play that. He's not gonna just hack and slash like some people might…. He's very mathematical as to how he approaches killing the walkers. And so now it's fun to go in and mix it up with the stunt people., but to also do it with Eugene’s signature style. I spent the first several seasons on the show like cowering in the back while everyone else is up there protecting me. I like the fact that I'm killing walkers now. I think that's kind of what keeps it fun and interesting. find out the things that she and the writers have come up with are way better than I could have planned. A lot of times, I might come into that conversation with her… thinking I'm going to say, “Oh, I'd like to do this or do that,” and then. We have conversations with the showrunner, Angela Kang, at the start of the season and we're able to offer up input of things that we would like to see with the character. Some people have bigger changes that go on through the season than others and others are kind of smaller…, I guess you could say, but that's really what keeps it fresh and interesting there. Josh McDermitt: The writers have done an amazing job at giving all of our characters - not just Eugene - a nice, satisfying arc every season.
